Men’s violence against women in intimate relationships is a serious social problem. The full extent of the problem is difficult to estimate, but for the abused woman and her children the consequences are severe. What do we know about the extent, causes and consequences of the violence? Which interventions can be used for prevention and treatment? And which research is still lacking?
Men’s violence against women in intimate relationships has emerged as a field of knowledge over the last 25 years. From originally seeking to find an overall cause of violence, research has since developed a more complex understanding of the issue. Violence is understood to occur in an interplay among different factors in society, the immediate environment, the relationship and the individual. However, there are still gaps in knowledge and areas left to develop. This Research brief gives a brief description of the current state of knowledge within the area.
